Kipland "Kip" Kinkel, 15, was highly intelligent but diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. He grew up in a strict household with academic pressure. Kip displayed early signs of psychosis and obsession with explosives and violence. He had previously been expelled for bringing a gun to school.
On May 20, 1998, Kipland killed his father, William Kinkel, after being suspended from school. That night he murdered his mother, Faith Kinkel, when she returned home. The next morning, armed with a .22-caliber Ruger rifle, .22-caliber pistol, a 9mm Glock and knives, Kip entered Thurston High in Springfield, Oregon, and opened fire in the cafeteria. He was tackled by students when reloading.
Kipland Kinkel pled guilty to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to 111 years without parole. He remains incarcerated in Oregon.
