The Washington Navy Yard shooting occurred on September 16, 2013, at Building 197 in the Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters in Washington, D.C. Armed with a Remington 870 shotgun, the shooter, Aaron Alexis, killed 12 people and wounded 8 others before being shot and killed by law enforcement.

Alexis enters Building 197 using his security clearance as a contractor.

8:15 AM – Shooting Begins

Opens fire on employees in the atrium from a balcony.

Shoots at random civilians and military personnel.

8:20 AM – Police Receive 911 Calls

Multiple employees call 911, reporting an active shooter.

Alexis moves through the building, searching for more victims.

8:30 AM – Alexis Acquires Handgun

Alexis takes a handgun from a security officer he killed.

Continues shooting indiscriminately.

8:40 AM – SWAT & FBI Arrive

D.C. Metropolitan Police, NCIS, and FBI tactical units arrive.

Building 197 is locked down.

9:00 AM – Law Enforcement Engages Alexis

Gunfight ensues between Alexis and SWAT officers.

Alexis moves through the building, evading police.

9:25 AM – Final Shootout

Officers corner Alexis on the third floor.

Shot and killed by police.
