On August 28, 2017, a tragic mass shooting occurred at the Clovis-Carver Public Library in Clovis, New Mexico. Nathaniel Jouett, a 16-year-old student from Clovis High School, entered the library armed with two handguns stolen from his father's unlocked safe. Jouett entered the library, proceeded to the restroom, and shortly thereafter emerged, opening fire indiscriminately. Witnesses reported that he appeared to be smiling and laughing during the attack, at one point shouting, "Run! Why aren't you running? I'm shooting at you! Run!" The shooting began around 4:15 p.m. MST within the library premises. Two library employees lost their lives & four others were wounded
Nathaniel Jouett had disciplinary actions taken against him prior to the shooting, including being involved in fights which led to being suspended from school. He had also been experiencing challenges, such as being bullied, mental health concerns, and suicidal thoughts. On the day of the incident, Jouett recorded videos from his home expressing his intentions and apologizing for his planned actions.
Jouett was apprehended at the scene with no resistance and later was charged as an adult facing 30 felony counts, including two counts of first-degree murder. In October 2018, Jouett pleaded guilty to all the charges. He was sentenced to two life terms with the possibility of parole, plus an additional 40 years. The judge mandated that Nathaniel continue mental health treatment during his incarceration and prohibited any contact with the victims or their families.
