On May 1, 2024, 14-year-old student, Damian Haglund, was fatally shot by police outside Mount Horeb Middle School in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin. Haglund, armed with what appeared to be a real firearm, attempted to enter the school but was unable to gain access due to locked doors. Police responded promptly to reports of an armed individual and confronted the student outside the building. Despite commands to drop the weapon, the student pointed it at officers, prompting them to use deadly force. The weapon was later identified as a Ruger .177 caliber pellet rifle.
The incident led to a lockdown of the school, with students and staff taking shelter in classrooms and nearby facilities. No other individuals were physically harmed during the event. The officers involved were placed on administrative leave, and an investigation was conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Justice. The Dane County District Attorney later announced that the officers would not face criminal charges, stating that their actions were justified under the circumstances.
The community of Mount Horeb was deeply affected by the incident, prompting discussions on school safety and mental health awareness. One year later, the school district marked the anniversary with reflections on healing and resilience.
