On December 2, 2015 a terrorist attack was carried out by married couple Syed Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27. They opened fire inside the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. 14 people were killed. And another 22 were wounded. Syed & Tashfeen were killed during a shootout with police. The attack occurred during a San Bernardino County Department of Public Health training event and holiday gathering.
The time of the attack was approximately 10:59 AM PST. The weapons used were two .223-caliber semi-automatic rifles (DPMS Panther Arms and Smith & Wesson M&P15) and two 9mm handguns (Llama and Springfield Armory XD). Their motive was inspired by Islamic extremism in which they pledged allegiance to ISIS on social media.
After the attack, the couple fled the scene in a black Ford Expedition SUV. A police chase and shootout ensued, leading to their deaths four hours later. ISIS claimed responsibility, though there was no direct operational link. FBI controversy arose when the FBI requested Apple's help to unlock Farook’s iPhone, leading to a legal battle. This attack remains one of the deadliest terrorist incidents in the U.S. since 9/11.
All 14 victims were county employees attending a training and holiday event.
