Israel Keyes, Multiple states (Active: 2001–2012)
Israel Keyes was an American serial killer who is believed to have committed at least 8 murders, though he may have killed many more. Keyes was known for his meticulous and methodical approach to his crimes, often traveling long distances across the United States to avoid detection. He was arrested in 2012 and eventually confessed to several murders, though he never revealed all his victims. Keyes died by suicide in his jail cell in December 2012, before more details could emerge.
Known Victims:
1. Bill and Lorraine Currier – 55 & 54 years old. Killed on June 8, 2011. The Curriers were a married couple from Essex, Vermont, who were abducted from their home by Keyes. He bound, sexually assaulted, and murdered them before disposing of their bodies. The bodies were later discovered in a wooded area, but Keyes took great care to leave no forensic evidence at the crime scene. Keyes was arrested in connection with their murders, which were the ones that ultimately led to his capture.
2. Samantha Koenig – 19 years old. Killed on February 1, 2012. Koenig was a barista working at a coffee stand in Anchorage, Alaska, when Keyes abducted her. He held her hostage for several days and eventually murdered her. He took photographs of her while she was bound and later sent a ransom note to her family. After killing Samantha, he disposed of her body in a nearby lake, and her remains were found months later. Her murder was the one that led to Keyes' eventual arrest, as he had used her debit card to make purchases in various locations.
Unidentified Victims
Keyes confessed to killing multiple people across the United States but was not forthcoming with the details of every victim. He used "murder kits," which were stored in various locations, to facilitate his killings. These kits contained tools, weapons, and other items to carry out his murders. It’s uncertain how many other people he killed. Authorities believe that the number of victims could be much higher, possibly as many as 11 or more.
Keyes is considered one of the most methodical and secretive serial killers in modern history, and his case has led to ongoing investigations into unsolved disappearances across the United States.
