Las Vegas Shooting (Route 91 Harvest Festival Massacre)

On the night of October 1, 2017, a mass shooting occurred at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music event held near the Las Vegas Strip. Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old man, opened fire on the crowd from his 32nd-floor suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The attack lasted approximately 10 minutes and is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Preparation by the Shooter

  • Stephen Paddock, a retired accountant and avid gambler, checked into Mandalay Bay on September 25, 2017.

  • He brought 23 firearms into his suite, along with thousands of rounds of ammunition and high-capacity magazines.

  • He installed cameras in the hallway to monitor law enforcement.

The Attack

  • 10:05 PM: Paddock began firing from Room 32-135 of Mandalay Bay, targeting the concertgoers below.

  • He smashed the windows of his suite to fire at the crowd, using modified rifles equipped with bump stocks to simulate automatic fire.

  • 10:15 PM: The shooting ceased as law enforcement closed in on his room.

  • 10:17 PM: The Las Vegas Police Department (LVPD) reached the 32nd floor.

  • 11:20 PM: Officers breached his suite and found Paddock dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Casualties

  • Fatalities: 60 people died from gunfire (two victims succumbed later from injuries).

  • Injured: 867 people, with 413 suffering gunshot wounds.

  • Victims: Attendees ranged in age from teenagers to senior citizens.

Weapons Used

Paddock had an arsenal of firearms, including:

  • 14 AR-15 rifles, some equipped with bump stocks (which allowed semi-automatic rifles to fire at near-automatic speeds).

  • 8 AR-10 rifles, a heavier version of the AR-15.

  • Handguns and shotguns.
