Las Vegas Shooting (Route 91 Harvest Festival Massacre)
On the night of October 1, 2017, a mass shooting occurred at the Route 91 Harvest Festival, a three-day country music event held near the Las Vegas Strip. Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old man, opened fire on the crowd from his 32nd-floor suite at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino. The attack lasted approximately 10 minutes and is the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history.
Preparation by the Shooter
Stephen Paddock, a retired accountant and avid gambler, checked into Mandalay Bay on September 25, 2017.
He brought 23 firearms into his suite, along with thousands of rounds of ammunition and high-capacity magazines.
He installed cameras in the hallway to monitor law enforcement.
The Attack
10:05 PM: Paddock began firing from Room 32-135 of Mandalay Bay, targeting the concertgoers below.
He smashed the windows of his suite to fire at the crowd, using modified rifles equipped with bump stocks to simulate automatic fire.
10:15 PM: The shooting ceased as law enforcement closed in on his room.
10:17 PM: The Las Vegas Police Department (LVPD) reached the 32nd floor.
11:20 PM: Officers breached his suite and found Paddock dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Casualties
Fatalities: 60 people died from gunfire (two victims succumbed later from injuries).
Injured: 867 people, with 413 suffering gunshot wounds.
Victims: Attendees ranged in age from teenagers to senior citizens.
Weapons Used
Paddock had an arsenal of firearms, including:
14 AR-15 rifles, some equipped with bump stocks (which allowed semi-automatic rifles to fire at near-automatic speeds).
8 AR-10 rifles, a heavier version of the AR-15.
Handguns and shotguns.
